2018-08-27 Aloha Argentina!!!

Hey guys, this week has been crazy!

08/23/18, Thursday
It was a bittersweet day and it was hard. We said goodbye to our teachers and that was hard. I will surely miss Hermano Ventura and Hermana Hallal.  We said our final goodbyes and we had a last testimony meeting together with our district in a circle.  It was good and I felt the spirit.  When people wonder if they were worth it, when they wonder if the atonement was worth it for them, they really were because everyone is special.  Someone shared that during the testimony and I really felt the spirit when they shared it because we are all worth it!

08/24/18, Friday
Today was spent traveling and it was fun. We took a flight from Mexico to Buenos Aires for about 9 hours and the plane was one of the nicest and biggest planes I have been on!  They served 2 meals and it was all in good company so that was great!  We got to Buenos Aires that night and stayed in a nice hotel!  We had amazing beef and fries and it was perfect. To top off the night, we had a nice room but the only downside is a Bidet!!! Those are crazy! jaja  I have no idea how I will learn to use it!  I will have to learn because they have them everywhere apparently jaja!!!!  [Note: A bidet is a plumbing fixture or type of sink intended for washing the genitalia, perineum, inner buttocks, and anus of the human body, and is usually located next to the toilet]
Buenos Aires looks like a cool city, I can’t wait!!!

08/25/18, Saturday
We woke up early and took a flight to Mar Del Plata and then connected to Bahia Blanca on the same plane. It was about 2 to 2.5 hours long.  I sat next to an Argentina lady so we talked and she said my Spanish was really good so that was cool!  We got to Bahia Blanca and met the mission president and the AP’s.  They are all awesome!  We got there and had lunch with them! We had Empanadas and they were so so sooooo good! Some of the best food is here! jaja.

We talked and then went to the clerks house. They have about 13 beds in the living room so that is way cool! We went there and then we chilled.  At about 5pm, we left for a baptismal service. There were 2 people getting baptized and then 2 more in another capilla (church). The people here are copado (cool/great) and they were welcoming. Most of the people that are not members however are not so welcoming.  We came home and we had pizza.  This may sound weird but they had eggs on it!  Fried eggs but it was super good. They weren’t lying when they said they have the best food here!

08/26/18, Sunday
Today, we went to church and it was good. It was interesting trying to understand them because their accent is way cool!  It will take a while before I have it down. We later went to President Hymas house in Bahia Blanca. It was huge!!!  They have a pool, a half basketball court and the house is amazing!  We had some good food and then we had interviews with president.  They were good and I can really tell that President Hymas cares about all of us.

Later, we left and then we met our new comps. My companion is an elder from Paraguay and his name is Elder Gonzales. He is pretty cool. He is a Latino so he should help me with my Spanish.  He also speaks English so that’s good. They have a lot of cool words here! Jajaja.  I am assigned to Santa Rosa in Bario 2.  It is bout 5 or 6 hours bus ride from the mission home.  We will be leaving at about 7pm tonight.  Elder Taylor from Idaho is going there with me.  I hear the people there are cool and there is a dog named Samuel that follows the missionaries around so I am super stoked!

08/27/18, Monday
Today we went to go do legal work for our residency here. Then we had Argentine facturas (pastry/sweet rolls – light, flakey, buttery and delicious) and they are so good with dulce de leche!  We are hanging out at the mission office until later when I leave.

I love you all and have a good day.

2018-08-22 Aloha MTC/CCM

08/16/18, Thursday
Today was a good day. We had normal classes and we were able to learn a lot. We did an activity with Hermana Hallal and she had us pray to know if the Book of Mormon is true, if Joseph Smith was a prophet, and if the church is true. It was a pretty cool experience.  I was there for about 15 or 20 minutes praying and the spirit was so strong. It is so good to know that the spirit testifies of everything, even the small things. I received a spiritual prompting that said, “You know these things to be true, you grew up with it and all the things you have been taught are true" and that was so powerful.  Although it was a small thing, the Holy Ghost did testify to me.

08/17/18, Friday
Today, we had a normal day, not much went on but we started an English fast.  So for 2 days, 48 hours, we weren’t allowed to speak any English.  So that was pretty fun.  I may have slipped a few times but I did my best.

08/18/18, Saturday
It was good, we were really excited for Elder Bednar and we are preparing so for a Zone meeting.  We had a meeting and we came up with good and quality questions we had for Elder Bednar.

08/19/18, Sunday
Today was really good. We had a couple devotionals and in one we watched a video of Elder Holland´s talk called “Feed My Sheep.” It was really powerful and it talked about how we need to be converted first before we can convert those in the field. In the mission, when we talk to investigators, we need to understand their circumstances. There was a good quote by him and it reads “You have to go to where the investigator is before the investigator can come to where you are" it was really good because sometimes we do not have that empathy link and we need that to open their hearts. There are 3 things missionaries do not do well and we need to improve on:

1) Missionaries do not study well;
2) Missionaries do not prepare well; and
3) We need to teach full of commitment.

These are all important and I know I can improve on all of these things especially studying.  I study a lot but I need to know how to study effectively.  As missionaries, we need to have full commitment.  Elder Holland said to forget ourselves, go to work, and feed the Lord’s sheep.  So yeah it’s very important in the mission to not be thinking about ourselves but to focus on the work, the people that we are teaching and more importantly to turn outward and serve those around us.   WE ARE THE HOPE OF ISRAEL. We are the Lord’s people and we need to build up Zion. When Jesus asked Peter to give up his nets and become a fisherman of man forever. It is the same for us. We as missionaries and members need to shed off our old life and not go back to it. As soon as we put our nets down and come unto Christ, we need to be that disciple forever until the day we can live with our Heavenly Father again.

08/20/18, Monday
It was fairly normal. We taught our last lesson with Myrna and it is sad. Even though they are not real lessons, we hate saying goodbye and saying we have a transfer or something of that sorts. It is so touching and amazing to be able to see someone the way that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ sees his children. It is amazing to see the love that He has for all of us and to see them at their full potential.

08/21/18, Tuesday
This morning was a shock. We found out that the missionaries going to Argentina and Chile are all leaving early and leaving this coming Friday.  Apparently all the mission presidents in Argentina and Chile are having this huge conference so that is why we are leaving early.  We had a meeting in reception to get our travel info.  So that means we won’t be able to see Elder Bednar.  It is a bummer but it is so cool we will be walking the streets in Argentina on Saturday!!!

Since it’s our last week here at the MTC, we have been having a lot of workshops and other things trying to prepare us for the mission field.

Later that day, we had a special thing with Hermana Hallal. She told us the real story of Myrna and who she is and then after, she called the real Myrna on the phone and we talked to her for a bit.  It was so touching and amazing when she shared her testimony and her baptismal story with us.  It is amazing to love these people you barely know but I know that’s the way our Heavenly Father sees all of us. It is with an Eternal perspective!

08/22/18, Wednesday
Hey guys, so it’s pday today.  I heard where Catlyn is going.  That’s super cool.  The Philippines!  She will be able to speak with you mom and everybody else speaking Filipino.

Well, I believe we will have a p-day on Monday in Argentina so I will talk to you guys later.  I love you guys!  Adios!!!

Excited to leave the CCM.  They can't wait to get out into the field.

2018-08-15 Caught a Bug!

08/09/18, Thursday
There were so many people sick that there are only six people from our district in class.  That was kind of weird but I honestly really like class. So yeah, bunches of people are sick.  We weren’t sure what was making us sick.

08/10/18, Friday
Today is a good day.  We learned a lot.  But yeah Friday, I think I was starting to get sick because towards the ending of the night I got chills.  That night, it was so bad that I had to ask one of my comps for their comforter.

08/11/18, Saturday
The next day, a lot of people were sick even more than before but I was getting sore stomach and bad diarrheas.  So yeah the diarrheas wasn’t that great a lot of water.

Hermano Ventura shared something it’s from the fourth missionary.  We really don’t have anything to get to the Lord, but the only thing that the Lord doesn’t have that we have is our minds and our hearts and while we’re here on a mission and even after the mission, like if you can give him your mind and your heart, then you’ll be truly giving Him your all because you’ll give Him everything that you can give.  And once your mind and your heart is given to Him and you let him take control that’s when you truly see the Lord’s hand in your work.

“Everything that you have to give to the Lord, has its origin in Him, except one thing: your will. He does not have your heart, nor your mind, unless you give them to Him. It is the only gift you have to offer that He does not already have. And so when you give yourself, you truly give everything to Him.”  The Fourth Missionary By Lawrence E. Corbridge

So I thought it was really interesting what he shared about the Fourth Missionary.  And honestly like it’s the best kind of missionary that you can be if you give everything to the Lord and you hold nothing back then He will open the windows of heaven unto you and pour out blessings and yeah it’s just amazing cause just like everyday teaching you still have those little experiences where you have a lesson plan but you throw it out of the window because of what the needs are for the investigator and you tend to those needs and you follow where the spirit guides.

So we walked in class one day and there’s this random quote on the board.  I don’t know who wrote it but it was after the devotional so it could have been anybody honestly but it says, ”Believe you’ll make it.  Give your worry up and let Him take it.”  I really like this quote because no matter what, everything that you go through if you turn to the Lord, then He’ll take your worries, He’ll make your burden easy.  I forgot which scripture but there’s a scripture in Mosiah where the Lord says, “come unto me and I’ll make your burdens easy and I will lift them off your shoulders and make them light.”  I think especially in the field when I get there, things will be super tough but as long as I am doing what I need to do and turn to the Lord then nothing can go wrong.

08/12/18, Sunday
I had the opportunity to bless the Sacrament in Spanish that was pretty cool.  Spanish is such a super cool language and especially the gift of tongues and learning with the spirit.  There’s no better way to learn it.  One of our branch leaders I think the first counselor, he came up to me after the Sacrament meeting and he said my Spanish is really good but it’s all thanks to the Lord.  I guess I don’t see the progress but it’s slowly coming.

Today we found out what was making all of us sick.  It was the Noro virus.  I think it’s spelled NORO.  It’s the kind of virus that you get on cruise ships.  Someone that came to the MTC brought the Noro Virus.  Since I was still kinda sick, after church the doctor ordered me to stay home and rest for the day.  I was pretty bummed out but I stayed in the house and studied.  I just sat there reading the scriptures so that was cool but I wanted so bad to go to the devotionals that they have on Sundays but couldn’t.

08/13/18, Monday
Today, I went to class and I learned a lot.  It was a good day but then all of a sudden after lunch when the Zone and district leaders had their meeting after gym time, they told me that I have to stay home if I have symptoms for three or more days so I listened to them.  I stayed in again.  I studied, cleaned and did whatever, studied some Spanish so I could keep up.  I prayed a lot when I was sitting there at home with the other sick missionaries and the Lord comforted me!

08/14/18, Tuesday
I feel much better today so I went to class and it was good.  Devotional tonight was pretty good.  So first of there were two musical numbers.  They were really good and I got to sing in the choir.  We sang Grande Eres Tu or How Great Thou Art and the song sounded so beautiful!

Then we heard from President and Sister Stapley.  Sister Stapley started her talk and she first talked about how the past is behind and we need to learn from it.  So the first story she talked about was the story of Achilles and how it was prophesied that he would die in battle one day so his mother took him to the river Styxs and bathed him but she was holding him by his heel… so everything in his body was made immortal except for his heel and that led her to toss that even the littlest things can cause us to fall.  We as missionaries are urged to follow exact obedience otherwise we would struggle in the mission.  She also talked about how weakness leads us to God because sin leads us away but weakness tends to lead us towards the Lord.   That make me think of Ether 12:27 “Come unto me and I will show unto you your weakness and I will make weak things strong unto them”.  It’s humbling to know that everywhere were weak and we need somebody to make it up for us.

Devotional with President and Hermana Stapley.

2018-08-08 Learning and Growing at the MTC

08/02/18 Thursday
In our morning class Hermana Hallal gave a lesson about el don de lenguas. The Spanish language is tough.  It gets discouraging at times and sometimes in the activities we end up complaining out of frustration and we would say "its too hard! or “I can’t do it!" But our teacher will quickly remind us that it is hard but we all can learn and do it if we persevere.  It was very spiritual.  Our teacher reminded us that we need to know that things will be tough out in the field but if we should take it head on and allow the Atonement of Jesus Christ to work on us and support us then things will be fine.  I love the notebook I have. It has Moses 6:32 and it says, " Open thy mouth and I will give thee utterance".   I know that I am a servant of the Lord.  Just like Moses, me and all the other missionaries are not perfect pero we need to open our mouth and do our part so the Lord can fill us with his spirit and let us know what we need to say. We may not speak the language correctly but it is about speaking in the language of the spirit that is what will convert the people who will listen to the gospel.

We had Teaching Resource Center (TRC) today and that is when you and your companion sit in the room and they bring in anyone that wants to speak to the missionaries. It can be members, investigators or even people that just want to experience having a lesson with the missionaries.  You have to teach the lessons in Spanish.  At first it was scary but after our first one, we calmed down. They both were members and they are both from Mexico. The first lady was cool and I can tell she is an active member. We had a good lesson and she left. The second guy is actually a student at BYUI and we taught him but he did not speak any English until after the lesson ended. It was a good experience and I love teaching the people whether it was a real investigator or a member.

08/03/18 Friday
Today was just normal day of classes and teaching.

08/04/18 Saturday
So today we were learning the difference between por y para and at first it made sense but then it got complicated.
The day was just okay.  We started our fast at dinner so the comedor was closed for dinner and breakfast on Sunday.

08/05/18 Sunday
This week was our first fast Sunday here, our only fast Sunday so far.  A lot of people from the Latino and the Gringo group leaving went up to bear their testimonies in Spanish.  I went up to bear my testimony!  It was pretty cool bearing my testimony in Spanish.  It’s more spiritual in my opinion.  I am learning to love the Spanish language and it is so amazing. We spent our whole day pretty much in Harold B. Lee auditorium with nice comfy, cushion seats.  We had 3 devotionals that day.  On one of the devotional, we watched a video of Elder Bednar when he spoke to the missionaries at the MTC in 2012.  It was on the attributes of Christ and the character of Christ.  He talked about how no matter what Christ was going through that instead of turning in towards himself to be selfish and fulfill his own self desires he always turned outwards to bless those around him.  So like the time when Jesus went out into the mountain to pray and Satan kept trying to tempt him.  But afterwards the angels came to minister him.  And he also talked about when right after Jesus bled from his pores and suffered in the garden of Gethsemane, He came out and that guard that had his ear cut off instead of just letting it be, he healed him.  This goes to show that Christ’s love is infinite and we should do all that we can to be exactly like Christ because no matter what people do to us we should have that love for everyone.  Hermana Hallal kinda like sort of talk about something similar in class but she said if you have a good attitude towards everything, you are going to be the best missionary out there.  Having a Christ like love for everyone that you meet.  It’s really powerful.

Sunday is centered on Christ and it is so amazing. It made me think of a video we watched earlier this week. It is called " President, Why is this so Hard?" by Elder Jeffery R. Holland.  It’s a missionary video.  It’s amazing to know that just us being here for these 2 years that we’re going to be able to experience a little taste of what Jesus had to go through from working miracles on the people all the way until the point where people spit on you and hate you but it’s all part of the growth.  It’s a blessing to know that our Savior is right there by our side to strengthen us and help us whenever we are feeling down or discouraged.  Watch the video, it really shows the unconditional love the Lord has for us and really understand why we need to be here on the mission. The video is from a talk called "Missionary work & the atonement" if any of you want to read the whole thing. I really wish I could print talks or other material so I can read some talks.

08/06/18 Monday
Today was not that great of a day, we figured out that we might possibly be losing one of our teachers and will be getting a replacement so this whole day, the whole class was super down and the spirit was not there this morning. We prayed 2 or 3 times together as a class because things were not working out. We as a district and with the teachers are super close, maybe the closest out of all the MTC in all honesty so it is hard to lose one of our teachers!  They are so great! We have the two best teachers in the CCM.  But life moves on. We do not know what will happen but hopefully we get to keep them. The day ended well, we learned some Spanish stuff but the hermanas were making a list of scriptures for us when we need to be lifted up and if you guys want the list, I can send you the list but they are all great for lifting us up when we need to feel the love from our Savior or when we are not having a good day here on the mission. I highlighted all of them but I have a better and more important list kinda. It is all good.

08/07/18 Tuesday
We had devotional today, our temple president and his wife spoke. They talked about being a covenant keeping people.  There was an object lesson where people choose 2 bags and they asked which one we chose and then after we chose, he had president Bennett and his wife come up to choose one and then based on what they said was based on what we chose. So if you decided to listen to President Bennett, you chose correctly and there was candy in the bag. If you chose wrong, there was nothing in the bag.

The Latinos are gone…sadly, our two favorite districts in our zone are gone.  That sucks but hopefully will keep in contact with the Latinos because they were cool.

Update, our prayers were answered today.  We are keeping both of our teachers so that is great!

The food is improving or we’re used to it already.  Were so hungry that we eat anything. It’s gotten to a point that we are eating fruit loops every single meal. But it’s not bad, it’s pretty good honestly.

Mexico isn’t what you expect.  You expect it to be humid and hot but for some reason it’s dry. I mean it’s still hot but it’s not as bad as you would think.  About 75 degrees.  But there are mornings when you wake up and you can see your breath but for some reason every single day after lunch, it rains, like buckets!  It’s so weird.

After the devotional, it was raining in buckets and our suits got all wet.  We ended up having to help a couple of new Latinos in our new district that we received today.  We received 2 new districts today.  One group of gringos and one Latino group.  We went to go track down their luggage that these Latinos couldn’t find and it was raining but luckily I found one of the cheap one used ponchos.  We helped them find their bags and took it back to their house.  But through all the rain and everything, we never complain.  Service is amazing especially on the mission.  You just learn to love everybody.

7/26/18 Thursday

We had a normal day.  We went through classes and learned Spanish. The other Latinos in our district are super cool and fun to talk to! I can talk with them but sometimes I trip up and say the wrong sentence jaja! We did Technology Assisted Language Learning (TALL). It is an interactive computer program used to learn foreign language and help you work on your vocabulary and grammar.  It is helping me learn Spanish and I know the spirit will help me learn it easier.

Today is the last day teaching Sebastián. Me and my companion are having a supposed transfer so we can not teach him anymore. We taught him about enduring to the end and how he needs to keep repenting, praying, going to church and doing all the things he needs to do. We also told him he should continue to take lessons from the missionaries that will be coming in place of us. I was so sad to leave him and I know it wasn’t real but when we bore our testimony and told him we loved him, I teared up! I know it will be harder in the mission field. Man if only he were a real investigator that would have been so cool! His persona was the ideal investigator and I know it may never be like that in the field but it was a good way to start and get my confidence up. I am really excited to get out on the field, I already love the people of Argentina and I do not even know them yet! jaja, I can feel the love Heavenly Father has for them and I just cannot wait!

7/27/18 Friday

We met a new "investigator" and it was our teacher from the first half of our class days. The situation was to use a membership record sheet to find and contact less active members. We got to her house and asked for a 108 year old man named Juan Perez but she said no one by that name lived there except her. We went along with the situation and taught her instead, we talked and got to know her and then set up an appointment for tomorrow. The scenario is that she has 3 kids, 2 passed away and 1 lives in another state. She had 3 husbands but 2 passed away and divorced one. We are going to teach her about the Plan of Salvation tomorrow and teach her how familia puede junto para siempre or "families can be together forever" She is catholico pero she should be receptive to what we need to say about living with her children forever. She seemed really worried about them and I know that if we have the spirit with us, we can teach her and help her to know of the truth and feel of the spirit also.

A whole bunch of people are getting letters and packages.  Me and a couple others are not getting any letters pero I can see it taking a toll on them and they seem sad at times but I do not mind. I am focused and know why I am here. I hope none of them in my distrito gets homesick or goes home, it’s sad to see someone miserable or sad and the last thing I want is someone from the Lord’s army going home.

John 6:38 “For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.”  It is a great scripture and it reminds me that I should not get distracted and continue to work hard.

When I accepted the call along with the other 600 or 700 missionaries here, we promised that while we are here, we leave behind all personal affairs and go to work. I promised to devote todo tiempo a el Señor and that is what I will do. I am doing his will and not mine own. I am here to do the Lords work porque I am his hands and an instrument for his work.

7/28/18 Saturday

Today we had normal classes and not much to write about.  We had class and just studied a lot of the language. In class we play a game called “Who is the Latino” and it’s super fun.  You are out if you speak English!

Now there's a good looking missionary, just a few finishing touches.

7/29/18 Sunday

Every Sunday we have choir practice which is very good and the song we practice we get to sing it at our Tuesday devotionals. At church we sit there and we wait to be called up to give a talk. Every week, we are given a topic and we randomly get called up to give the talk in Español. I have not been called up yet but I feel like it will happen soon jaja! After sagrado de cena, we have priesthood and usually it is a lesson from Preach My Gospel. This past week, it was on using members to further and make the work easier. It makes sense and it also takes good missionaries as well as willing members. The missionary has to first provide the proof that the members can trust them. They need to show they are willing to help the Lord as well as the ward in all their efforts.

We had cake as well because there were a couple birthdays this past week in our branch.

The homes on the hill are so colorful.

We later had the weekly Sunday devotional and it was Pres. & Sis. Bennett who were conducting. They talked about building up of Zion. It was very good and there was a quote that they shared. It was "The building up of Zion is a cause that has interested the people of God in every age; it is a theme upon which prophets, priests and kings have dwelt with peculiar delight; they have looked forward with joyful anticipation to the day in which we live; and fired with heavenly and joyful anticipations they have sung and written and prophesied of this our day; but they died without the sight; we are the favored people that God has made choice of to bring about the Latter-day glory"

This just shows how much Heavenly father loves us and it is all thanks to those that came before us that we are able to enjoy and love the gospel we have today. It is true that many people have died waiting and rejoicing for the day in which we live in so do not waste a second of it. We need to live our lives so that every second is used to the full extent. We should use our time to establish Zion and not worry about petty things like social media or other things of this world.

In the youth broadcast that President Russell M. Nelson gave, he said that establishing of Zion is the greatest work of all, nothing is more important than this work. He has invited all of us both young and old, bond and free so that we may enlist in the army of the Lord and take our ranks. We are in war with Lucifer and we are dealing with the salvation of souls.  The most important work of all is to bring all our our lost brothers and sisters back into the fold.

On the way to the Temple

The Bennetts also talked about using the members and being the kind of missionary no one wants them leaving the area. I found it interesting how in some areas had missionaries when they get transferred out, the bishop or whoever calls the mission office and ask why they are being transferred.

7/30/18 Monday

Today was a normal day, went through class as usual. We had a great day but a couple thoughts came to me while I was listening in class. The teacher talked about how the Lord has invested so much in all of us so when we learn the language, we should not only learn it for the mission but for the rest of our lives. It was made apparent to me that he has invested so much in us as missionaries. The books, the teachers, the food and everything has been provided for us, all we need to do is study all we can and to take in as much as we can. The Lord is so merciful and loving and he knows us and what we need.

I love this quote from President Gordon B Hinkley and it says " I invite every one of you, wherever you may be as members of this church, to stand on your feet and with a song in your heart, move forward, living the gospel, loving the Lord, and building the Kingdom. Together we shall stay the course and keep to the faith, the almighty being our strength"  This quote really motivates me and gets me through the day when it gets long, boring and hard in class.  I also sing a lot of hymns out loud or in my head and it really help to calm me down.

7/31/18 Tuesday

First off, dad thank you for the advice on studying the New Testament, it has really helped and I have studied it everyday. I find that when we are role playing and the investigator is Catholic, it seems easier when I need to turn to a scripture or find a verse that is familiar to the investigator and help in our lesson.

We usually have devotionals on Sundays and Tuesdays.  The devotional today was about how we as missionaries need to step it up especially for the Elders. They called up 5 hermanas to talk to everyone about how the elders should be worthy of the priesthood they use.  It was very good and humbling because it really helped us to do a self check and see if we are  doing what we need to do and if we are not, we need to step it up.

There were a few quotes some of them said. (1)"If you knew who you were in the pre-mortal life, you would try harder" and (2) "No empty chairs.”  The first one hit me especially because it is true! If we knew who we were, we would do so much better. We are on the earth at this very moment for a reason and we are among the Lord´s chosen and the strongest so we need to act like it. The second quote was that we all want to live with our family together forever both with out families now and our future families, the people on the mission you meet, the investigators you touch, and your future wife or husband and your kids along with it. We all want to have them there with us in eternal life so we should not want or have empty chairs. There is a chair there for everyone in your family!
